Helena Vallès Escola

Operations Manager

Originally from Barcelona, Helena found in Montreal the ground to consolidate her interest in photography and her long time engagement in social and cultural activism. Mainly, by documenting the unfolding of inclusive practices with social positive impact that empower people through engagement and collective intelligence. Helena has worked for organisations such as Forum Jeunesse de l'Île de Montréal, Apathy is Boring, Citoyenneté Jeunesse and SUCO.

On the field, her work dynamics are guided by a constant intention to have a respectful presence, establish an intimate interaction with her subject, and undertake a sensitive study of the context at hand (both physical and social). Departing from the understanding that every space has dynamics that are already underway, she first introduces herself as a neutral character. This allows her to absorb and learn from the context so as to better capture it and expand it through images. She proposes an intimate interaction to her subjects based on mutual understanding and acceptance in order to provide them comfort and a sense of value. Additionally, she brings a specific care to composition, light and the timely capturing of actions, which provide a constant and engaging aesthetic to all of her work.

Alongside her path as a freelancer, Helena has established a close collaboration with the artist, teacher and impact creator Damian Siqueiros, first as his technical assistant, then as coordinator and operations manager of some of his artistic and educational projects, such as Terrarium and Terra Sapiens Education. Her role means that she is deeply connected to the activities of the studio in all of its forms. Helena is in charge of supporting the artistic endeavours from research and logistics to production, client relations and documentation. Helena ensures a smooth production process from beginning to end.
