Philosophy as an Artist and Photographer:
Art for Impact

In my practice as an artist and photographer, I integrate a profound commitment to environmental and social activism. Art and photography is often dismissed as ornamental and ineffective within the realm of environmental activism, but I strive to challenge this notion by creating art that, alongside empathic storytelling, plays a significant role in incepting, accelerating, and implementing positive cultural shifts.

The core of my work lies in the belief that art can and should be a catalyst for change. Through the Terra Sapiens Studio, we act on a long-term impact timeline, introducing narratives that foster environmental and social healing. Our process is meticulously designed to create direct impact through our artistic endeavors and educational initiatives. By doing so, we aim to give purpose and support to those who seek to improve their social-ecological environments.

The Photographic Aspect of My Work

Collaboration is a vital component of my process. It is essential to build a harmonious and trustful relationship with the client and my collaborators through empathy. I begin with extensive research, delving into the brand identity, its values, and goals.

This phase is crucial as it informs the narrative and empathic elements that will be woven into the campaign. I then move on to the conceptualization stage where I develop a visual and thematic framework.

My work is characterized by a thorough reflection of the narrative built with the client to closely represent the values of the brand and lead to their success by understanding their audience.

For years, I have studied natural light, both through my exploration of nature and its depiction in art history. The light in my images is always a mix of natural light and flashes that reproduce the essence of the sun at dusk or dawn.

I love the softness of these moments of transition, which remind us that every moment is ephemeral and precious and that we are all in constant transition. This light is also incredibly soft, often reducing the need for cosmetic retouching of the images.

My photos often look finished at the moment they are shot. During the shoot, I pay enormous attention to the model, our energy, and the energy of the room, so the emotion we want to portray is created and not just faked for the image. I use breathing and theater techniques, trust, and music to take the model there. I create worlds through set design so the magic is instantly created at the moment of the shoot. The post-production is often light and simply enhances the images to get them ready for their commercial use.

Measures for
Environmental Sustainability

  • Reducing Travel Distances: We minimize travel by using public transport and human-powered means of transportation.

  • Energy Efficiency: We source energy from green providers and reduce data storage needs.

  • Carbon Neutrality: We strive to minimize the need for offsetting by integrating sustainable practices directly into our process.

  • Waste Reduction: We eliminate single-use materials, use compostable plastics, and preserve materials for future productions.

  • Sustainable Materials: We prioritize upcycled, recycled, and vegan materials.

  • Vegan Catering: Our events feature vegan catering, serving more than 100 meals.

Measures for Social Sustainability

  • Open Communication: We create pathways for harmonious and open communication.

  • Equity and Representation: We ensure gender, age, and cultural equity through non-hierarchical representation and interwoven perspectives.

  • Interconnecting Beauty with Ecology: By linking the concept of beauty with ecological health and sustainability, we encourage a reevaluation of what is considered beautiful. This perspective suggests that beauty is not separate from the ecological context but is deeply interconnected with the health and vibrancy of ecosystems. Thus, actions that promote environmental sustainability and biodiversity can also be seen as enhancing beauty.

  • Promoting Inclusivity and Equity: Our framework advocates for inclusivity and equity in representations of beauty, ensuring that diverse perspectives are represented and valued.

Conclusion

Ultimately, my intent is to use art as a tool for impact, to support and inspire those who are dedicated to improving their social-ecological environments. This is a vision that I can share and sometimes educate my clients. We can be change makers just by doing what we love,  contributing to a cultural shift that values and integrates art as a powerful vehicle for environmental and social change.
